There may be plenty of new characters in the game to play alongside Kazuya and Jin, but showing them off and no one else seems to indicate that the game is more of the same, simply fine-tuned for new hardware. On the other hand, Tekken 8 is doing the exact opposite, all after promising to end where the series had been up to that point. Now, Street Fighter 6 is looking to really take the series forward in a big way, and that includes moving past Street Fighter III's place in the timeline and brawling in uncharted territory. Street Fighter has also been known to be somewhat reluctant to move forward, with it taking Capcom forever to even count from Street Fighter II to Street Fighter III. Nevertheless, the two franchises are easily the biggest Japanese fighters, with SNK's The King of Fighters series no longer a major contender. Though it's a 2D fighting game and not a 3D series, Capcom's Street Fighter franchise is the main rival to Tekken. It's especially noticeable given the forward momentum of another fighting game series. It could be argued that the "Mishima Saga" did end with Heihachi's death, but with Kazuya and Jin still around, that's something of a cop-out. A better idea would have been to have Jin facing off against a new foe, setting the stage for a fresh beginning. This is a huge missed opportunity to do something new with the series, especially since the game's predecessor was supposed to end this chapter. Tekken 8, the newest entry in the series, will apparently pick up from that plot thread, with the footage shown so far having Kazuya and Jin fighting each other. ![]() The storyline in Tekken 7 had Kazuya finally defeat and kill his father, all while his son pledged to do the same to him. This continued in later games, with Kazuya's illegitimate son Jin Kazama also being added into the mix. This storyline began with the series' first entry, pitting father and son Heihachi Mishima and Kazuya Mishima against each other. Tekken 7 was touted by Bandai Namco as the end of the Mishima Saga. ![]()
